Meeting of the Rotary Club of Eureka
November 11, 2014

This was a special Veterans Day celebration that started off with a special poem, Ragged Old Flag, read by Pat Folkins.

We are not celebrating all our nation’s heroes and the diverse branches of the military but a special recognition of the Marine Corps 239th birthday.

Major Steve Beckman led the Pledge of Allegiance.

Eureka High Limited Addition sang the Star Spangled Banner.

DR. Kim Bauriedel led the invocation with a thought going out to past President Hank Ingham who was undergoing surgery and to keep in mind Jesse Klair, whose mother is quite ill.  Please also keep in mind all the Veterans who have been wounded or died in the many wars we have been involved with. He also read the Marines Prayer.

The National Defense Cadet Corp was next with the flag salute.

Eureka High School Band led an introduction to each military division.

The first being recognized was the US Army and all who were involved in the Army stood and were recognized individually.

The next division was the Navy and the Veterans stood and were recognized for their valor and heroism.

Following the Navy was the Air Force.  They also introduced themselves and were recognized for their valor and heroism.

The Coast Guard was recognized but did not have any representatives.

Marine Corp Veterans were recognized and applauded.

Greg noted that there were an amazing group of Veterans present at Rotary.

Steve Justice spoke about the Honor Flight and thanked all the Rotary for the support of this wonderful program.

A special round of applause was given for the World War two Veterans.

No one won the raffle, so the money will go back into the ever growing pot.

The Marine Corp was honored with a special slide show for their 239th birthday.

Respectfully submitted,
Lisa Corral

Meeting of the Rotary Club of Eureka
June 23, 2014

Today’s menu: beef stew over rice, deep fried cod over scalloped potatoes, paper over rock, rock over scissors, scissors over paper.  Dessert was chocolate cake.

Greg Bowen led the pledge.  Dan Heinen gave the invocation.  He asked us to include Wayne Wilson and Paula Patton in our prayers.

Matthew Owen introduced his daughter Molly who had just returned from a year of Rotary exchange in Thailand.  She had lots of fun, learned a little Thai, and had to leave quickly when the military staged a coup.

Gregg Gardiner introduced new member Jerry Reece, former owner of McDonalds in Eureka, who is now in the cruise business.

PP Tom Schallert encouraged participation in Rotary events.

Ziggy then tried to rid himself of his remaining t-shirts.  Sue Bosch got one for her 58th anniversary.  Joan Davies got one for visiting the Dominican Republic.  Ray Wickel got one for driving up from Arizona.  Gary Todoroff got one for going to Swaziland.  Kurt Barthel got one for consulting.  He had about 24 shirts left over that will probably end up in a dumpster, so if you see a homeless person in a blue Rotary T-shirt, don’t mistake him for a Paul Harris Fellow.

Our speakers were –Sequoia Park Zoo General Manager Gretchen Ziegler and Foundation President Chuck Dominic who talked to us about their Watershed Heroes project.  It will include their new displays for River Otters, Salmon and Bald Eagles.  The grand opening is July 26th.  They have some new exhibits: Bush dogs ,a gray parrot, and Yaks.  Their future master plans include adding a redwood canopy walkway. They will also get some additional animals like wolverines, Tamarinds, and kudzu.

The zoo is now the oldest operating zoo in California.  It’s also one of the smallest accredited zoos.  It’s owned by the City of Eureka.  The city budget for the zoo is $900,000.  Additional revenue comes from the admission fees, snack bar, gift shop and the Sequoia Park Foundation.  They have two fundraisers:  Zootini on August 14th, and Brew at The Zoo.  Some money comes from ransoming small children who wander away from their parents.  Unclaimed children are fed to the Bush dogs.  (disclaimer:  Bush Dog is not a political statement).  Thank you for reading this far.  You can go now.

Respectfully submitted,
Hank Ingham

Meeting of the Rotary Club of Eureka
March 24, 2014

Nick Bertell led the pledge and Dan Price gave the invocation.

It was then Ziggy realized that the microphone was not working. He compensated for it by yelling.

Dan the exchange student reported on his recent activities. He just finished reading “The Grapes Of Wrath.” He didn’t understand it.

John Bradley spoke for Backpacks for Kids. The program started in 2007 as a joint effort with Food For People and is now a multi-club effort that packs 114 bags a week at a cost of $6 a bag. The food goes to needy kids so they have enough to eat on weekends. They’re having a fundraiser Barbeque and Dance on April 25th.

Carol Rische and the small grant committee presented a check for $700 to Jeff Smoller of Making Headway, a non-profit that supports people with brain injuries. They give out 400-600 helmets a year to help prevent trauma.

Fred Sundquist introduced a new member, Jason Ganz, COO of City Ambulance. Kim Bauriedel gave the Past President’s talk.

President Ziggy reminded everyone that the January-June 2014 dues need to be paid, or else. The “else” is Ziggy calling you up at 5am.

Then there was a little recognition. Ziggy awarded T-shirts to Rick Littlefield and Hank Ingham because their teams lost during March Madness.  As if losing wasn’t enough, Ziggy then announced that there would be a River Project on the Mad River on April 19th for which he needed a work crew. Said crew would be able to refresh themselves after work at the Mad River Brewery.

Jill MacDonald and Sue Bosch won the Spengler Science Fair drawing.

Program
Our program was Cliff Victorine, who heads Eel River Organic Grass Fed Beef. They started direct marketing over 10 years ago and now are one of the largest purveyors of Organic Grass Fed Beef in the U.S. Their marketing area is from Alaska to San Diego and east to Idaho. Locally, Eureka Natural Foods sells a lot of his product.

Conventional beef comes from cattle that start in pastures but in the last 90-120 days are fed corn in feedlots. This fattens them up in a hurry, but it’s not their natural food. Organic Grass Fed Animals are inspected to be antibiotic free and raised on organic pastures where they eat only hay and grass. In addition the Animal Welfare Program monitors the farms to make sure the animals are sheltered and not mistreated. His meat company has created jobs in Humboldt County and brought in revenue. There’s much at steak here and we must not be cowed by those who herd corn fed beef is better. For moo information visit www.eelriverorganicbeef.com
